Beckham asks Lampard to join LA Galaxy

Beckham asks Lampard to join LA Galaxy
Malaysia Sun
Saturday 31st December, 2011??
(ANI)

Ace midfielder David Beckham has urged Frank Lampard to join LA Galaxy.

Beckham spoke to the Chelsea star twice in the last 12 days about the switch and told his former England pal that he would love the lifestyle in California.

Lampard, 33, is frustrated with life at Chelsea under Andre Villas-Boas and is set to be on the bench again for today's home clash with Aston Villa.

Galaxy could match his 150,000 pounds-a-week Blues wages and the midfielder appears certain to move to America at some stage, The Sun reports.

He is now waiting on an offer from MLS championss Galaxy who are hoping Beckham snubs a move to Paris St Germain.

The former England skipper is leaning towards signing a one-year rolling deal in LA.

An MLS source revealed: "Galaxy have three designated players - Beckham, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, who is on loan at Everton. However, there could be a way around the rules so Lampard could also join." (ANI)

Photo of the day: Majestic tree in a California vineyard

Jana Ireijo / UGC

Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, Calif.

Jana Ireijo, an oil painter based in Westport, Conn., took this photo in summer 2011 while visiting California's Santa Ynez Valley.

The area is located 35 miles north of Santa Barbara and is home to many vineyards.

Ireijo told TODAY.com that she took the photo in order to paint the tree.

"I drove for miles that day ... in and around back roads, dirt trails, getting lost in wine country," she said.? "I took several pictures of old barns, and other trees, but this is the only one that captured the magic that day."

The region left a memorable impression on Ireijo: "It is a pocket of paradise hidden away from the rest of the world ... little red schoolhouses, rolling hills with purple shadows, quiet starry nights and where talk at the local coffee shop is of grape harvests."

You can see Ireijo's paintings on her website.

Amazon Debuts Store To Recommend ?Best Of? Digital Books, Apps, Movies, Software, Music And More

Amazon.com_ Best of DigitalAmazon is making it easier for its users to discover recommended content today with the launch of a new 'best of' digital store, where consumers can find recommendations from Amazon?s team of editors on the year's best of movies & TV shows, music, video games, software, mobile apps, magazines and Kindle books and more. Basically, Amazon will recommend the best of any type of digital content that the company sells. Cancer from fetal exposure to carcinogens depends on dose, timing

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? The cancer-causing potential of fetal exposure to carcinogens can vary substantially, a recent study suggests, causing different types of problems much later in life depending on the stage of pregnancy when the fetus is exposed.

The research sheds further light on the way in which toxic damage early in life can later manifest themselves as cancer, due to "epigenetic" changes in cells. It was done by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, and other institutions, in laboratory studies with mice.

In this study, published in the journal Cancer Letters, mice received four separate doses of a carcinogen commonly found in air pollutants or other combustion products. As a result, they had triple the level of ovarian cancer at the rodent equivalent of middle age. About 80 percent of them also got lung cancer, and many of the male mice had abnormally small testes -- a phenomenon not seen before.

In previous research, by contrast, the same amount of this carcinogen given in a single dose had caused a much higher rate of T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, which this study found to almost disappear when the carcinogen exposure was spread out over time. Liver cancer also was largely absent.

"There's still a lot of uncertainty about how the fetus responds to carcinogens and at what points in time it is most vulnerable," said David Williams, a professor of environmental and molecular toxicology at OSU.

"We know it's far more sensitive than adults for several reasons, including faster cell division and the lack of protective detoxifying enzymes," he said. "But it's interesting that the timing of fetal exposure makes such a difference in which organs are targeted. These results were somewhat surprising."

The mice in these experiments were exposed to one type of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, a group of compounds commonly produced by everything from coal combustion to automobile exhaust. The levels of carcinogen the mice received were far higher than humans would face in a normal environment.

In the research, tracking with radioactive labeling showed that the carcinogens clearly made their way into the mouse fetuses, although at about 10 percent of the tissue concentration of those in the mother. The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, and included collaborators from OSU and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Increasing amounts of research are being done on PAHs, which are associated with the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, and may be on the rise in some areas, particularly China, Williams said. They can also get into soils, be taken up by plants and make their way into the human food chain.

The types of cancer that these carcinogens can cause in animal models include lymphoma and leukemia, and cancer is the number one cause of disease-related death in children. Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure of pregnant women to carcinogens such as cigarette smoke enhances the risk for offspring to develop a number of cancers.

"The fetal basis of adult disease is relevant to a number of chronic diseases in humans, including diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease and cancer," the researchers wrote in their report, "as well as neurological and behavior toxicities."

Research such as this, scientists say, suggests that a healthy diet is important during pregnancy, including a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, in particular, have high levels of some compounds believed to help protect against cancer.

Tiger's first post-scandal win: Is he really back? (The Week)

New York ? The fallen golf star claims victory at the Chevron World Challenge ? but skeptics aren't quite ready to call Tiger a comeback kid just yet

It's been more than two years since that fateful Thanksgiving weekend when Tiger Woods' life began unraveling, first with a mysterious car accident, and then a barrage of revelations about his serial infidelity. In the wake of the humiliating scandal, the world's number-one golfer lost his wife and numerous lucrative endorsement deals. Beset by injury and, presumably, a shaken focus, he fell to 52nd in the world rankings. But on Sunday, Woods finally turned in his first post-scandal victory at the Chevron World Challenge in California. Has the golfing legend returned to form?

Yes. Welcome back, Tiger: Sure, Sunday's win came at an unofficial event with a small field, says Mark Lamport-Stokes at Reuters, but Tiger "played well for four consecutive rounds," something he's struggled to do lately. Tiger has made big changes to his life and game, ditching his longtime caddie, for example, and, on Sunday, Tiger and his new sidekick worked well together. "In throwing off much of the old for the new, it would now seem that the old Tiger is back ? or at least a new and perhaps an improved version."
"Analysis: Chevron win suggests Tiger is back to his best"

Let's not get ahead of ourselves: "The win is a step in the right direction, but Sunday was hardly the final round of the U.S. Open," says Kurt Badenhausen at Forbes. The Chevron is an event Woods himself hosts, on a course he knows very well. Tiger had just 17 challengers, and the five top-ranked golfers in the world weren't among them. To convince me (not to mention mega-sponsors), Woods is going to have to win a few more.?
"Is Tiger Woods back?"

At the very least, it's a good story: Despite the relatively weak field, Sunday's win was a "landmark moment in the arc of golf's broader narrative," says Laurence Donegan at Britain's?Guardian. Woods' fall from grace was epic and his victory this weekend would make a good plot point in a sweeping movie. But before Aaron Sorkin starts working on the script, the once-great golfer will need to win against some truly difficult competition.
"Tiger Woods's Chevron win is a great story ? but is he really back?"

May I reserve a Spark? Idc if male or female, but they sound like more fun to play.

We are all like fireworks. We climb, shine, and always go our separate ways and become further apart. But even if that time comes, let's not disappear like a firework, and continue to shine forever.

Lockheed Martin shows us how it's getting Orion ready to explore the cosmos

It's not every day that America designs an entirely new spacecraft. Rarer still is the creation of a vehicle that can carry man, not just machine, beyond the earth's gravitational pull. In the history of the world, there have been only eight such human transports: the Vostok, Voskhod, and Soyuz capsules from Russia, the American-made Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules, plus the Space Shuttle, and China's Shenzhou spacecraft. That list is going to get a new member soon, as NASA (with a big assist from Lockheed Martin) is building the most technologically advanced spaceship the Earth has ever seen; the aptly-named Orion.

In ancient Greek mythology, Orion was a hunter born of the earth who was eventually placed among the heavens by Zeus. NASA's Orion is a multipurpose crew vehicle (MPCV) that looks similar to the Apollo capsules and is here to replace the venerable Space Shuttle. It's capable of taking us further into the cosmos to than we've ever been -- to asteroids, the moon, and even Mars. This mission flexibility and interplanetary reach is what sets Orion apart from previous manned spacecraft, but that adaptability requires some heavy duty engineering and extensive testing to guarantee its ability to handle any NASA mission with aplomb. Head on past to break to learn more about how Lockheed Martin's getting the MPCV ready for deep space.

(AP) ? The head of Mexico's former ruling party resigned Friday over a financial scandal that threatened the party's efforts to rebrand itself as corruption-free and retake the presidency in 2012.

Institutional Revolutionary Party head Humberto Moreira stepped down at a party meeting broadcast nationwide and intercut with live denunciations by opposition politicians. It was a remarkable scene in a country where the leader of the PRI once held virtually unquestioned power.

The PRI ruled Mexico for seven decades until voters angry at economic mismanagement, cronyism and corruption voted for the conservative National Action Party in the 2000 presidential race.

Eleven years later, Mexicans appear to widely accept the PRI's argument that it has learned from the past and become open and democratic. Its youthful and telegenic candidate, former Mexico State Gov. Enrique Pena Nieto, leads potential competitors by double digits in recent opinion polls on the July 2012 election.

Moreira was widely promoted as the face of the new PRI after he stepped down as governor of the northern state of Coahuila last January. He frequently appeared in national campaign ads with party candidates for key state races.

Then, in July, the Coahuila legislature said the state's total debt was four times larger than the 8.4 billion pesos ($700 million) that was reported by state officials just before Moreira stepped down.

The PAN said it suspected at least some of the public money was stolen by officials, demanding a criminal investigation into the assets of one of Moreira's former aides. Moreira has not clearly explained the ballooning debt figure, but has said repeatedly that the debt issue is being used by PAN as a smear campaign.

For months, Pena Nieto and other powerful PRI members stood by Moreira, who repeatedly said he would not step down.

Then, on Monday, Coahuila's state treasurer was arrested on suspicion of falsifying state documents that authorized the government to seek new loans ? the first criminal charges in the case.

Pena Nieto and other PRI members began distancing themselves from the party head, and on Thursday the presidential candidate told Milenio Television that the party "clearly needed to weigh the circumstances of the weakening of our party's leader."

By Friday it was clear Moreira would be forced out.

"I've resigned because I'm not going to allow a media war that is trying to harm our party to continue," Moreira told party members. "I also do it because I believe in a man who is the hope for Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto."

PRI secretary-general Cristina Diaz was named interim president of the party.

The national head of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, Jesus Zambrano, said Moreira had been "sacrificed" to save Pena Nieto, 45.

"It's becoming much clearer that the highly touted new PRI is the same old PRI that the majority of the people threw out of the presidency in 2000 because it was a true burden and a tragedy for the country," he said.

The conservative PAN has filed a complaint with the federal Attorney General's Office demanding an investigation into Moreira's former aide, Vicente Chaires, claiming he became rich on an administrative secretary salary while buying property in Texas and becoming a partner in radio stations. The PAN complaint accuses him of lending his name to assets on behalf of Moreira, though it provides no proof.

PAN Secretary-General Cecilia Romero went further Friday, telling reporters there was clear evidence of criminality in the budget scandal.

"The voices of millions of people who believe in accountability and transparency as ways to strengthen institutions and protect citizens from abuses of authority won't be satisfied just with his removal as president of the PRI," she said. "We demand that the legal case continues."

Standard & Poor's has said Coahuila's debt was accumulated mostly because of public investment. Coahuila's lawmakers agreed they spent what was needed on infrastructure to create jobs and weather the 2008-2009 global recession that hit income from manufacturing and remittances sent from relatives living in the U.S.

Moral dilemma: Would you kill 1 person to save 5?

Thursday, December 1, 2011

Imagine a runaway boxcar heading toward five people who can't escape its path. Now imagine you had the power to reroute the boxcar onto different tracks with only one person along that route.

Would you do it?

That's the moral dilemma posed by a team of Michigan State University researchers in a first-of-its-kind study published in the research journal Emotion. Research participants were put in a three dimensional setting and given the power to kill one person (in this case, a realistic digital character) to save five.

The results? About 90 percent of the participants pulled a switch to reroute the boxcar, suggesting people are willing to violate a moral rule if it means minimizing harm.

"What we found is that the rule of 'Thou shalt not kill' can be overcome by considerations of the greater good," said Carlos David Navarrete, lead researcher on the project.

As an evolutionary psychologist, Navarrete explores big-picture topics such as morality ? in other words, how do we come to our moral judgments and does our behavior follow suit?

His latest experiment offers a new twist on the "trolley problem," a moral dilemma that philosophers have contemplated for decades. But this is the first time the dilemma has been posed as a behavioral experiment in a virtual environment, "with the sights, sounds and consequences of our actions thrown into stark relief," the study says.

The research participants were presented with a 3-D simulated version of the classic dilemma though a head-mounted device. Sensors were attached to their fingertips to monitor emotional arousal.

In the virtual world, each participant was stationed at a railroad switch where two sets of tracks veered off. Up ahead and to their right, five people hiked along the tracks in a steep ravine that prevented escape. On the opposite side, a single person hiked along in the same setting.

As the boxcar approached over the horizon, the participants could either do nothing ? letting the coal-filled boxcar go along its route and kill the five hikers ? or pull a switch (in this case a joystick) and reroute it to the tracks occupied by the single hiker.

Of the 147 participants, 133 (or 90.5 percent) pulled the switch to divert the boxcar, resulting in the death of the one hiker. Fourteen participants allowed the boxcar to kill the five hikers (11 participants did not pull the switch, while three pulled the switch but then returned it to its original position).

The findings are consistent with past research that was not virtual-based, Navarrete said.

The study also found that participants who did not pull the switch were more emotionally aroused. The reasons for this are unknown, although it may be because people freeze up during highly anxious moments ? akin to a solider failing to fire his weapon in battle, Navarrete said.

"I think humans have an aversion to harming others that needs to be overridden by something," Navarrete said. "By rational thinking we can sometimes override it ? by thinking about the people we will save, for example. But for some people, that increase in anxiety may be so overpowering that they don't make the utilitarian choice, the choice for the greater good."
